Writings

We hope you enjoy all the great stories, columns and unique insights on birds and the joys of being a backyard birder.  We're accepting submissions from people across the nation, so if you have something you'd like considered, please email it to Tami Vogel, our Communications Director.

We've started this section with two well-respected "Minnesotans:"  Jim Gilbert and Al Batt, and added more authors as time's gone by.  We even have articles on bird-feeding related topics.

Jim is a naturalist and works with Gustavus Aldophus.  He's well-known throughout the state for his sharing his extensive experience and knowledge via speaking events, radio shows and newspaper columns.  His phenology, or annual record of events, is published in our quarterly newsletter for members and is the basis of information for the annual Weatherguide Calendars.   Jim's Phenology

Al is humorist, writer and lover of all things natural.  He is, of course, Lutheran and lives in southern Minnesota.  He travels from Alaska to Costa Rica speaking to groups and leading bird trips.  He was named Birder of the Year by Wild Bird Magazine and even authors several nationally-syndicated comic strips.  His insights on nature are heart-warming and humorous and never fail to make one pause to consider the wonder of the world around us.    Al's Musings

Val Cunningham is a nature writer and bird enthusiast who lives in St. Paul, Minn.  Writings by Val
